Football writer Alex Keble analyzes the 2024/25 Premier League title race, explaining why the upcoming period of matches could be season-defining and how the champions could be determined when Liverpool host Arsenal in May.
Liverpool are currently in control of the title race, but there is still every reason to believe their battle with Arsenal will go down to the wire, especially as Arne Slot’s side face a crucial eight-day stretch that could shape the outcome of the season.
Liverpool’s Tough Run Ahead
The league leaders have started a run of three challenging matches with a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Wednesday. They now face Manchester City and Newcastle United, and if they lose both of those fixtures AND Arsenal win their next two games against West Ham United and Nottingham Forest, then Arsenal will end next week just two points behind Liverpool but with a match in hand.
As Arsenal know all too well from past title challenges, things can change very quickly at the top. Indeed, this is Arsenal’s third title race in as many years, and that experience alone makes it foolish to write them off, despite a raft of injuries leaving them without key players like Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Form Guide Comparison
Liverpool have now dropped points in two of their last three Premier League matches, drawing with Everton and Villa, and scraping a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. They have also been knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship club Plymouth Argyle, winning just one of their last four outings in all competitions, suggesting the Reds might be slowing down.
In contrast, Arsenal have won five of their last six matches in all competitions, with their only defeat coming against Newcastle in the EFL Cup. The Gunners’ wins have felt more convincing than Liverpool’s, as they have conceded only one goal in their last three Premier League games and have beaten rivals Tottenham Hotspur and thumped Manchester City 5-1 in their last five matches.
- Liverpool have collected 11 points from their last five Premier League matches, while Arsenal have picked up 13.
- Arsenal have won five of their last six matches in all competitions, only falling to a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in the EFL Cup.
- The Gunners have conceded only one goal in their last three Premier League matches and have beaten Tottenham Hotspur and thumped Manchester City 5-1 in their last five games.
The upcoming fixtures for both teams suggest a tight and thrilling title race is in store. Liverpool have a more favorable schedule in the coming months, with five of their six Premier League matches through March and April against teams in the bottom half of the table, while Arsenal face tricky matches against the likes of West Ham, Manchester United, and Chelsea.
However, the league leaders’ tougher run in May, which includes matches against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Brighton & Hove Albion, could open the door for Arsenal to make a late surge.
Ultimately, the title race looks set to go down to the wire, and the pivotal match between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield on May 10th could prove to be a potential title decider.
